About Clare Mortimer

The hidden cost of coping is often carried by the people who look the most capable.

Clare Mortimer – The Cortisol Reset Coach

I knew that feeling.

The one that arrives before you have left the house. Not anxiety about whether the day will be difficult. A solid, settled certainty that it will be, and the quiet knowledge that you will get through it anyway because you always do.

You have been getting through it for a long time. That is the part nobody around you fully understands, because from where they are standing, you look fine. You are still delivering. Still leading. Still the person everyone calls when something needs sorting. What they cannot see is what it is costing you to keep that up, or how long you have been running on reserves that are no longer being replenished.

You have not told anyone how bad it actually is. The responses you would get are not answers to what is happening in your body, and somewhere you already know that.

People like you rarely look unwell from the outside.

Capable people absorb more before they visibly break. By the time the symptoms are obvious to anyone around you, they have usually been building for years. The sleep that no longer restores you. The weight that will not shift however carefully you manage everything else. The gut that has been reacting for months. The brain that used to be your sharpest tool, now foggy by mid-morning and struggling under pressure in ways it never used to.

The body has been communicating for a long time. The difficulty is that people who are very good at getting things done are also very good at overriding signals they do not have time to deal with.

I know this world from both sides.

I spent years working in environments where sustained overload was the expected operating condition. Where the response to reaching the edge of what you could carry was not to reduce what was being poured in, but to hand you better coping strategies and send you back in. The cost of it showed up in my body long before I had the language for what was happening. Weight my body decided to shed without consulting me. A gut that had stopped working properly. An emotional landscape that had lost its middle ground, everything either fine or catastrophic, nothing in between. Running on cortisol and adrenaline and very little else, and my body doing what bodies do under sustained, unrelenting demand.

Your environment is different to the one I worked in. The pressures look different. And you have something I did not have: the ability to change the conditions you are operating in. But the mechanism is identical. The body does not check your job title before it starts doing its work.

What eventually became clear to me, after years studying hypnotherapy, NLP, EFT, breathwork and the neuroscience beneath all of them, is that the standard approaches were trying to solve a physiological problem with intellectual tools. Talking about it. Reframing it. Building your capacity to absorb more of it. None of those approaches reach the level where the problem actually lives, below the thinking mind, in the patterns the body has learned through repetition and survival. That level needs a different kind of conversation entirely. That is what I am trained to have. And that is what this work is designed to do.

In Clare’s own words

Understanding the physiology beneath chronic stress changes the conversation entirely.

The question worth asking

The body always adapts to the environment it lives inside.

The question is whether the adaptation is still serving you.
